Code of Ethics
Responsibilities to Our Students
- The relationship between teacher and student shall be established, maintained, and terminated in a professional manner. The teacher shall respect the personal integrity of students at all times.
- Members are responsible for encouraging, guiding and developing the musical potential of each student.
- Members shall encourage students to participate in community musical activities.
Responsibilities to Our Colleagues
- Under no circumstances should a teacher make a direct or indirect solicitation of another teacher's students. This includes inviting other teacher's students to recitals without the prior knowledge of their teacher, as well as consultation with parents of other teacher's students. Before accepting new students, a teacher should ask for proof that lessons have ceased and financial responsibilities with a prior teacher have been met.
- Teachers should not publicly claim a new student until the student has studied with them for at least six months. However, the student may enter BRMTA events during the six month period, provided the names of both teachers are used.
- Teachers should require of their students appropriate dress and behavior when performing or when attending the performance of others. In a recital situation, teachers should instruct their students to remain seated in the audience until the completion of the recital.
Photocopying Music is Unlawful
- All legitimate competitions have the rule that no photocopied music may be used. Teachers should maintain this restriction in their own studios and with their students.
